The National Veterinary Research Institute (PIWet) was established in 1945 as a scientific unit of the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the Government Order of 21 October 2003, the PIWet obtained the Status of the State Research Institute which is obtained for institutes which perform tasks of particular importance for the planning and implementation of state policy, including the actions necessary to ensure public safety, defence and national security. The major mission of the Institute is applied research in veterinary medicine with particular emphasis on the diagnosis and control of animal infectious diseases including zoonoses as well as the hygiene & toxicology of food of animal origin and feeding stuffs. Additionally, the Institute evaluates the quality of biologicals and diagnostic kits, provides the expertise and consultancy services for the ministry of agriculture and rural development and for veterinary inspection.
